What film is the best to use for a pinhole camera?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I made a pinhole camera but I don’t know if there is a particular film to be able to capture a good shot. Can you help me? Also, how long should I expose it? Thanks!

ISO 400 4"x5" sheet film.

If you know how to cut up 120 or 220 film in a darkroom, you could save some money, but something like Ilford HP5 or Kodak TMAX 400 are good to start with:
Here is a list to get an idea of what you’ll be paying (about $1 per sheet)

How do you become an established film director?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I plan on going to university and studying screenwriting as an undergrad and then doing film as my post grad. Hopefully I will be able to find work after that.

Do you work up the ranks or just become a film director?
I noticed that a lot of talent agents start in the mail room and such, is it similar for film directors?

many start as actors, writers, or producers.
the most important thing to have is connections.

How do I unload film from a kodak colorsnap 35 model 2?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I recently bought a colorsnap 35 model 2 from ebay but when it arrived there was a roll off film in and I can’t get it out! I have brought the rewind knob out from the recess but the film is stil jammed in, am I doing something wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Is all the film rolled back into the cansiter? If not, do this first.

If so, try removing the canister at an angle.

What is the name of this film, and where can I find it online?

What kind of vintage film camera should I buy?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Vintage film cameras have recently peaked my interest. I bought a Polaroid OneStep Land Camera, but have come to find that one cannot buy film for such a camera. What other vintage film cameras should I look for that are fairly old, but still "alive" in the photography industry. In other words, I’d like an old camera for which I can buy film.

Yashica D TLR – TLRs are fun, with their waist level view screens, and the quality of a well made one is stunning (the yashica D’s lens is sharp, put in some nice film, and go to town)

Or a Minolta Autocord, both fantastic TLRs and about $100-$150

What is the difference between processing film and developing film?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I called a photo lab in my area and they said that they could only PROCESS 120mm film and had no way of printing it. Does that mean that it would come out as a negative and not an actual picture?
Or on a more basic question what is processing and printing and developing?

P.S Where would be a good place to get 120mm film developed that doesn’t charge an outrageous price?

Develop = develop the exposed film to produce a negative (or a slide)
Print = print from the negative onto paper to produce a photograph on paper!
Processing = same as developing.

It would help if you actually said where you were in the world then maybe someone can recommend a local lab.

Can you develop color film with black and white developer?

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Is there a certain kind of developer for color film or does it use the same as black and white? If there is what kind? Also I have become pretty skilled in developing black and white film , but i have color film will the color film develop in black and white developer (if theres a difference) but just be black and white?

The first step in color processing is basically a standard black and white developer, as far as just developing the silver is concerned. So, you can develop color film in black and white developer, but it will be very grainy and the orange color of the film base acts like a safelight when you try to print it. The result is extremely long printing times, and very grainy images. I’ve done this before for people who had an important roll of color film that had been contaminated with chemicals from a washing machine. Color labs won’t touch a roll like that because it could contaminate their chemistry and ruin thousands of dollars of processing solutions. So the only choice was to retrieve the images with black and white chemistry. It worked, but printing the negatives was a time consuming headache.

How can I film a night scene with only basic camera equipment (but decent software)?

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

I am filming a video project for school. We have a very basic video camera/camcorder. We do not have any other camera equipment or lighting equipment. However, I am able to use Sony Vegas 9 to edit my videos. How can I film/edit a good-looking night scene? This scene is supposed to be inside a house, at night.

The only way you’re going to get a half decent picture is to slow the shutter speed right down – there is usually a setting on the video camera if you can find a manual override in the menus.

If you can’t find this option, check if there is a "nightshot" option – Sony includes this on many of their models – this invokes an infra-red LED that will illuminate the scene and causes the picture to give off that greenish tinge popularised in the Blair Witch Project. Good luck – sounds like a lot of fun!

What is the difference between a MFA film degree and a film school degree?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

I read somewhere that "A film school degree will not necessarily secure you a place in the Hollywood film industry. However, an MFA film degree will definitely be able to help you."

How do you get a MFA film degree?

I hate to break it to you but even an MFA would not help you out in Hollywood. Actually a lot of producers, directors, and actors have never even gone to film school. Your best bet is to start working in the industry and then to just keep pushing. Getting a film degree would be a huge waste of time.
